The band already carries BANA 50th Anniversary; your personalization goes alongside it, with a maximum of 15 braille cells including spaces. A cell isn’t quite the same as a letter — a capital letter uses one extra cell for the capital sign, and so does a number, so “Jennifer” is 9 cells rather than 8. Contracted braille packs the same words into fewer cells, so a name that’s slightly too long uncontracted may well fit contracted. The Braille Authority of North America turns fifty in 2026, and this tumbler marks it. One side carries the anniversary emblem — Celebrating 50 Years of Braille Excellence — over a map of North America, with the BANA wordmark and its name in braille beneath. The other reads “Braille Rules. We Made Sure of It.” above a reader with a book open under their hands. It is being produced for active BANA representatives, and is open to anyone who would like one.
Every tumbler is produced by a braille transcriber certified by the Library of Congress in Literary Braille and Nemeth Code, with National Braille Association certification in Textbook Format — so the braille on it is correct braille, not a decorative approximation of it.
Yes. The dots are raised and spaced to be read with the fingers, not printed on flat as decoration. It is produced by a certified braille transcriber, which means the code itself is correct as well as the feel of it.
If it’s a gift for someone who doesn’t read braille, or you want each letter to correspond to a letter, choose uncontracted. If it’s for a braille reader, contracted is what they read every day and it will feel natural to them — and it fits more text in the same space. Either is correct; they’re just different.
The anniversary text is already on the band; your personalization is limited to 15 braille cells including spaces. Cells and characters aren’t the same thing: a capital letter needs an extra cell for the capital sign, a number needs one for the number sign, and every space is a cell of its own. So “John Smith” comes to 12 cells uncontracted, not 10. Because contracted braille uses fewer cells for the same words, a name that’s slightly too long uncontracted may well fit contracted.
