- When required by law, subpoena, or to protect our legal rights
- In connection with a business transfer, such as a merger or acquisition
Mobile information will not be shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. All categories above exclude text messaging originator opt-in data and consent; this information will not be shared with any third parties.
6. Cookies and Tracking
Website analytics. qualitybraille.com uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to count page views, so we know which pages people read. It doesn’t use cookies or store anything on your device, and it doesn’t build a profile of you or follow you to other websites. For each page view it records the page, the site that linked to it, general details such as browser, operating system, device type and country, and how quickly the page loaded. We see only these totals. Cloudflare, Inc. provides it under its own privacy policy. We don’t record which buttons or links you click.
Cookies. Our marketing pages don’t set cookies of their own. Signing in to the QBT web app (app.qualitybraille.com) uses the cookies and browser storage it needs to keep you signed in, as described in section 10. You can control cookies through your browser settings.
7. Data Security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect your personal information. However, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
8. Your Rights
Depending on your location, you may have the right to:
- Access, correct, or delete the personal information we hold about you
- Opt out of marketing communications
- Request information about how your data is used
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at support@qualitybraille.com.
9. Children’s Privacy
Our website and services are not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
10. Quality Brailler App
Quality Brailler (formerly QBT Brailler) is a braille editor made by Quality Braille Transcriptions LLC. It is a Windows app (from the Microsoft Store), a Mac app (from the Mac App Store), a web version that runs in a web browser at app.qualitybraille.com/brailler, and the iPad app (from the App Store), once it is released. Until then, on an iPad you use the web version. The Mac app and the iPad app are available in the United States only. In this section, “the app” means all of these, and “your device” means the computer or iPad you use it on. This section explains what the app keeps on your device, what it sends to us, what we keep, who else is involved, and the choices you have, including how to delete your account. The rest of this Privacy Policy also applies to the app.
Your files stay on your device. The app opens braille files (such as .bml, .brf, .b2k and eBraille files), including files you open from File Explorer, the Finder or the Files app, edits them, and saves them on your device, and you can do this without signing in. We receive the content of a document only when you use one of the features listed under “What the app sends to us” below.
What the app keeps on your device. The app keeps the following in its own storage on your device. Apart from the sign-in token, which the app uses to show our server who you are, and our server’s own cookies, none of it is sent to us.
- Your sign-in: a sign-in token and your email address, so you stay signed in. Choosing Sign out removes them.
- Recovery copies: while a document has unsaved changes, the app keeps a full recovery copy of it so your work can be restored after a crash or power cut. A copy is deleted when you save or close the document. If the app itself closes with unsaved changes, the copy stays on your device until the app next starts, when you can recover it or discard it. Recovery copies are kept whether or not you are signed in, and signing out does not remove them.
- File history: earlier versions of the files you work on, kept when you save, every few minutes while you edit, and just before a Replace All or a restore, so that you can go back to one with File history. Up to 100 versions of each file are kept; versions older than 90 days are removed, apart from the newest 10, and the oldest go first if the history grows very large. File history stays on your device and is never sent to us.
- Settings: your display choices, Quick Keys, templates, the words you add to your spelling dictionary, your choice of contractions and similar preferences.
- Cache and cookie files: the app draws its screens with the system’s web engine (Microsoft Edge WebView2 on Windows, WebKit on a Mac and, once it is released, in the iPad app), which keeps its usual cache files in the app’s storage, and the app keeps a small cookie file for our server.
When you uninstall the Microsoft Store version of the app, Windows normally removes this storage. If a copy of the app from outside the Microsoft Store (including one named QBT Brailler) was used on the same Windows account first, its storage folder (%LOCALAPPDATA%\com.qualitybraille.brailler) is left in place, and you can delete it yourself. When you delete the iPad app (once it is released), iPadOS removes its storage with it. On a Mac, the app’s storage is in its own folder (~/Library/Containers/com.qualitybraille.brailler), which macOS may leave in place after the app is deleted; you can delete that folder yourself. In the web version, the same information is kept in your browser’s storage and cookies for app.qualitybraille.com, and clearing that site’s data removes it.
What the app sends to us. Braille translation, print view, the Braille Checker, the special symbols page and PDF conversion run on our server, so they need an internet connection and a QBT account. When you use them, the app sends the following to app.qualitybraille.com, always over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection:
- Translation: the print text you translate into UEB or Nemeth braille, with the translation choices you have made (such as the contractions to use). This includes text you type or paste to insert, running heads, print you edit, and the text of Word, EPUB, Markdown or text files you open to translate.
- Print display: braille that the app shows as print, so it can be translated back into print. This happens in print, interline and side-by-side views, for the print title page in two-page view, when you print or save a PDF that includes print, and when you edit a paragraph or a running head as print.
- Braille Checker: a copy of the document you have open, whatever its format, with its file name, when you run the checker or save its PDF report.
- Special symbols page: the braille of the document you have open, when you make a special symbols page, so our server can list the symbols it uses.
- PDF conversion: when you choose Convert a PDF to braille (this needs a braille converter plan on your QBT account), the PDF you choose, with its file name and the conversion settings. Our braille converter turns it into braille and the app opens the result.
- Documents from Word: when you send a document to the app with our Word add-in, the app collects it from our server, as described in section 11.
- Your account and plan: your email address and your password or emailed 6-digit code when you sign in or create an account, and checks of your trial or plan status. In the Windows app and the web version, also the plan you pick when you start a checkout, and a request for your Stripe billing page when you choose Manage billing. If you choose Delete QBT account…, the request to delete it, with the email you type to confirm.
- An app identifier and version: a random identifier the app creates for itself when it first runs, the kind of app (for example “Windows app”, “Mac app”, “iPad app” or “Web browser”), and the app’s version number, sent with each request so that a license is used on one device at a time and so that we know which versions are in use. The identifier is not your device’s advertising identifier or serial number.
What we keep on our server.
- Not your text or braille. We translate what the app sends and send the result straight back. We do not store the text or braille, and we do not use it for anything else. Documents sent to the Braille Checker are processed in a temporary folder that is deleted before the results come back. If you save the checker’s PDF report, a copy of the report (which shows the document’s file name and short excerpts of its braille) is kept on our server for up to 30 minutes and is then deleted. PDF conversions are the exception, described next.
- PDF conversions: for each PDF you convert, a record of the conversion (its file name, date, number of pages, whether it worked, and any error), so it shows in your recent conversions. Working copies of its results are kept on our server for up to 14 days. A copy of the PDF and of the braille made from it is also kept in our business file storage (Microsoft 365) as your archived transcription record, so we can check the quality of a conversion and help if something goes wrong. These records are kept until you delete your account; to have them deleted sooner, email support@qualitybraille.com.
- Account details: your email address, your name if you give it to us, your password in scrambled (hashed) form if you set one, and when you created your account and last signed in. Your account is created when you enter the 6-digit code we email to a new address. In the app, choose Create a free account (beside Sign in) and type your email address; we email you a 6-digit code, which you enter to sign in. In the web version, Create a free account opens our sign-in page, which works the same way. Sign-in codes are also stored only in scrambled form, and they expire after 10 minutes. A sign-in ends after 30 days without use, or when you sign out.
- Plan details: when your free trial started, your plan, its status and renewal date, and the Stripe customer and subscription reference numbers for your account.
- Which device is using your license: while you use Quality Brailler, the app identifier and kind of app of the device using your license, its internet (IP) address and when it last checked in. We also record, for 90 days, each time your license is moved to another device (“Use it here”) and each time the same device checks in from a new internet address, with that address. We use this only to keep a license to one device at a time and to spot a license shared between people.
- Which app versions you use: for each device you use the app on while signed in, its app identifier, the kind of app, the app’s version number and when it last checked in. We use this only to see which versions are still in use and when to ask people to update. It is kept while your account exists.
- Payment records: for each payment, our accounting records keep the date, the amount, the plan, the Stripe invoice number and your email address (or, if Stripe has no email, your name).
- Checker usage: for each Braille Checker run, the date, how many files and pages were checked, and how many errors, warnings and notes were found. We do not keep the content.
- Server logs: the date and time of each request, the address requested and whether it worked; for new accounts, math translations, checks and payments, the account email or account number and a short note of what happened (for example, how many items were processed); and details of any errors. Logs do not record the text or braille you send, although an error record can occasionally include a short piece of text that could not be processed. Logs are kept for a limited time for troubleshooting and security, and are then deleted. Rarely, to track down a fault in braille translation, we may switch on a diagnostic log for a short time; it records the first 120 characters of each piece of text translated while it is on, is used only to find the fault, and is deleted once the fault is found.
Your QBT account and these records are stored on a server we operate in the United States and in backups of that server. Our staff also receive some of this information by email and in internal business reports, as described under “Emails” and “Who else handles this information” below.
Free trial and payments. There is one 14-day free trial of Quality Brailler per email address, with no card needed. If an account that had Quality Brailler (a free trial, a plan, or free access from us) is deleted, a new account made later with the same email address doesn’t get a free trial (see “Deleting your account” below). The trial starts the first time you use the app while signed in. The Mac app (and the iPad app, once it is released) doesn’t sell plans: it uses the trial or plan of the QBT account you sign in with. Plans are bought through Stripe Checkout, which opens in your web browser. Stripe collects your card or other payment details directly, and we never see or store your full card number. To set up your purchase, we give Stripe your email address, your name if it is on your account, and your QBT account number. Stripe tells us which plan you bought, whether payment succeeded, the amount and invoice details of each payment, and when a subscription renews or ends. Monthly and yearly plans renew automatically until you cancel them. You can cancel at any time. In the Windows app or the web version, choose Plans & billing… on the Account menu (or under Translation in Setup), then Manage billing. This opens Stripe’s secure billing page in your web browser, where you can also update your card and see your invoices. Or email support@qualitybraille.com. When your free trial or plan ends, Quality Brailler locks on your account until you choose a plan. Files you saved stay on your device, and the installed app still opens, edits and saves braille files without signing in.
Emails. We email you your sign-in codes, a welcome message when a new account is created or when you first use Quality Brailler, a notice if a subscription payment fails, and a confirmation if your account is deleted. Stripe creates an invoice for each payment and may also email you receipts or invoices. When you buy a plan, when a subscription ends, when a payment fails, or when an account is deleted, our staff also get an email with the account email so we can help if something goes wrong. We do not use your Quality Brailler account details to send you marketing emails.
Who else handles this information. We use these service providers to run Quality Brailler. Each one gets only what it needs for its job:
- Stripe, Inc. processes payments and manages subscriptions (Stripe Privacy Policy).
- Microsoft Corporation provides our business email and file storage (Microsoft 365). It sends our emails, including sign-in codes, it holds the archived copies of PDF conversions, and it holds our staff’s copies of purchase notices and our internal monthly business reports, which list new accounts and payments by email address.
- Cloudflare, Inc. provides network security and delivery for app.qualitybraille.com. The app’s encrypted connection ends at Cloudflare, so everything the app sends to us, including text and braille, passes through Cloudflare’s network, which forwards it to our server over an encrypted tunnel.
- Document-recognition services read the PDFs sent for PDF conversion, to recognize their text and math. They receive the PDF and its file name, not your account details. Nothing else the app sends goes to them.
- Apple Inc. distributes the Mac app (and the iPad app, once it is released) through the App Store and TestFlight, under Apple’s own privacy policy. If you have chosen in your device’s settings to share analytics with app developers, Apple may give us crash reports and usage statistics about the app that do not identify you.
We do not sell your information or share it for advertising. The app shows no ads. The Windows and Mac apps (and the iPad app, once it is released) contain no analytics, advertising or tracking tools, and we do not track you across other companies’ apps or websites or share your information with data brokers. The web version’s pages, like the rest of app.qualitybraille.com, are delivered through Cloudflare, which may measure how quickly pages load without using cookies. We do not use your documents, text or braille to train artificial intelligence models.
Deleting your account. In the Windows app (version 1.1.25 or later) and the Mac app (and the iPad app, once it is released), you can delete your QBT account yourself. While signed in, choose Delete QBT account… on the Account menu (the Translate menu in older versions), or under Translation in Setup. Then type your account’s email to confirm. From the web version, or if you prefer, email support@qualitybraille.com and we will delete it for you. When an account is deleted, in the app or by us at your request:
- Any active subscription, to Quality Brailler or to our braille converter, is canceled at once and is not renewed, and saved payment cards are removed from Stripe.
- Your account details, plan details, sign-ins on every device, sign-in codes, the records of which devices used your license and which app versions they ran, and your checker usage records are deleted.
- Your archived transcription records are deleted: the records of your PDF conversions, their copies in our business file storage, and any working copies on our server.
- Paid invoices are kept, as the law requires, but no longer show who you are: your customer record at Stripe keeps only an account number (no email, name, phone or address), and our accounting records show that account number instead of your email.
- We email you a confirmation, and our staff get an email saying which account was deleted. We keep a one-line note that the account was deleted, with its account number and a one-way code made from its email address.
- If the account had Quality Brailler (a free trial, a plan, or free access from us), we also keep that one-way code on its own. It is not your email address: we can’t read your address from it, but we can recognize the same address if it is used again. We make it with a secret key that we keep on our server, apart from our daily database backups, so the code alone can’t be checked against a list of email addresses. We use it so that a new account with the same email address doesn’t get a free trial of Quality Brailler, and to answer questions about the deleted account. We keep it with no end date, including in our server backups. If the account never had Quality Brailler (for example, it was used only for our braille converter), we keep only the one-line note, not the code on its own, and deleting the account doesn’t use up the free trial for that address.
Apart from the one-line note and the one-way code, your personal data is removed from our live records at once, and its copies in our server backups are deleted as those backups expire. Braille files on your device are not touched. Stripe keeps its own payment records for as long as the law requires.
Staff, vendor and project-manager accounts can’t be deleted in the app. We delete them by hand, and no emails are sent: the account and its sign-ins are removed, projects it was assigned to are kept, and the one-line note and the one-way code are kept as for any other account. If our work records still need the account (for example, because it made a project, quote or invoice), it can’t be deleted, and we keep it with those records.
Your choices.
- You can open, edit and save braille files without signing in. Only translation, print view, the Braille Checker, the special symbols page and PDF conversion need an account.
- You decide when text, braille or a document is sent to us: the app sends it only when you translate, when you choose a view or action that shows braille as print (listed under “What the app sends to us”), when you use the Braille Checker or make a special symbols page, or when you convert a PDF.
- You can sign out at any time with Sign out on the Account menu, or under Translation in Setup.
- You can turn off Autosave to file on the File menu. Recovery copies are still kept on your device until you save or close the document.
- You can cancel a subscription at any time: in the Windows app or the web version, choose Plans & billing… on the Account menu (or under Translation in Setup), then Manage billing. Or email us.
- To get a copy of your account information or correct it, email support@qualitybraille.com. To delete your account, see “Deleting your account” above.
Security. Everything the app sends to us travels over the internet encrypted (HTTPS). The app itself connects only to app.qualitybraille.com (its fonts are built in). Links, such as this policy, open in your own web browser, and in the Windows app and the web version so do payment and billing pages. Microsoft Edge WebView2, the Windows component the app uses to draw its screens, may also contact Microsoft according to your Windows settings. Passwords and sign-in codes are stored only in scrambled (hashed) form.
11. Quality Brailler Braille Prep for Microsoft Word
Quality Brailler Braille Prep is an add-in for Microsoft Word, made by Quality Braille Transcriptions LLC for Microsoft AppSource. It helps you prepare a Word document for braille and send it to Quality Brailler. This section explains what it keeps, what it sends to us and what we keep. The rest of this Privacy Policy, including the Quality Brailler account details in section 10, also applies.
Checking and marking stay in Word. The check, its fixes and the marking tools work on the document you have open, inside Word. They send nothing to us. Choosing Save a copy saves the document to your own computer and also sends nothing.
What the add-in keeps. If you sign in, the add-in keeps a sign-in token and your email address in its own storage on your device, so you stay signed in. Choosing Sign out removes them.
What the add-in sends to us. Apart from the anonymous totals described below, only these, and only when you choose them:
- Signing in: your email address, and your password or the 6-digit code we email you. This is the same QBT account you use in Quality Brailler, and the account details described in section 10 apply.
- Open in Quality Brailler: a copy of the document you have open, as a Word (.docx) file, with its file name. Quality Brailler, signed in to the same QBT account, collects it from our server and opens it.
- Suggest a description: the one picture you ask about. Our server has an AI image-description service draft a description of it, and sends the draft back for you to check, change and save. It needs a QBT sign-in (free) and is limited to 25 pictures a day per account.
The add-in’s pages come from word.qualitybraille.com, which forwards these requests to app.qualitybraille.com. All of them are delivered through Cloudflare, and everything travels encrypted (HTTPS).
What we keep. A document sent with Open in Quality Brailler waits on our server only until Quality Brailler collects it. It is deleted as soon as it is collected, or after 10 minutes if it is never collected. Only the QBT account that sent it can collect it. We do not read it, keep it or use it for anything else. A picture sent with Suggest a description is not kept: it is used for that one draft and then discarded, and it is not used to train AI models. We keep only a count of how many pictures each account has asked about that day, so the daily limit works. Our server logs record when a document was sent and collected, its size and the account number, but not its name or content.
Microsoft and Cloudflare. Microsoft provides Word and AppSource, and Word loads Microsoft’s Office JavaScript library from Microsoft. Microsoft handles that under its own privacy statement. Cloudflare, Inc. delivers word.qualitybraille.com and keeps standard server logs (such as internet addresses) for security. The add-in uses no cookies, ads or tracking tools. We do not use your documents to train artificial intelligence models.
Anonymous totals. So that we know how much Braille Prep is used, word.qualitybraille.com keeps daily totals: how many times the add-in file is downloaded (and whether from the web page, the Windows or Mac instructions, or an IT department’s address), how many times the panel is opened in Word, and how many times Check document, Fix the simple ones for me, Open in Quality Brailler, Save a copy and Suggest a description are used. Each total is only a number for the day. It does not record who you are, your account, your internet address, your device, or anything about your document.
12. Free Braille Translator
The Free Braille Translator on our website needs no account.
- Uncontracted (Grade 1): translated in your browser. What you type is not sent to us.
- Contracted (Grade 2): what you type (up to 2,000 characters at a time) is sent to our server at app.qualitybraille.com, translated into braille and sent straight back. We don’t store the text. Our server’s log notes that a translation was made and how many characters it had, never the text itself. To prevent abuse, the server counts translations per visitor (by the network address Cloudflare reports) for 10 minutes, in memory only.
- See your name in braille: translated in your browser. If you choose Copy link, the name is part of the link you copy, so anyone you share it with can see it.
Requests travel encrypted (HTTPS) through Cloudflare.
13. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The “Last Updated” date at the top of this policy reflects the most recent revision. Continued use of our website, apps or SMS program after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
